#Prepare the file
Fieldnote imports CSV files of up to 10,000 rows. Larger lists can be split into several files. Download the template from Settings > Data > Import > Download template to get the exact column names.
- Required: customer name, plus either an email address or a phone number.
- Optional: company, billing address, job site address, site notes, tags and customer type (residential or commercial).
- One customer can have several job sites. Put each extra site on its own row with the same email address.
#Upload and match columns
Fieldnote shows a preview of the first 20 rows before anything is saved, so you can fix a column that was matched to the wrong field.
- Go to Settings > Data > Import and choose Customers and job sites.
- Upload your CSV file.
- Check that each column is matched to the right Fieldnote field. Change any that are wrong.
- Review the preview of the first 20 rows.
- Click Start import. You get an email when it finishes, usually within 5 minutes.
#How duplicates are handled
Fieldnote matches existing customers by email address, then by phone number. A matching row updates the existing customer and adds any new job sites instead of creating a duplicate. Rows that fail (for example, no name, or no email and no phone) are listed in an error file you can download, fix and upload again.
