#Common reasons

Open the invoice and click Payments to see the reason Stripe gave.

  • Card declined: the customer's bank refused it. Ask the customer to try another card or contact their bank. Fieldnote cannot see more detail than Stripe gives.
  • ACH returned: the bank account had too little money or the details were wrong. Returns can arrive up to 4 business days after the payment. The invoice goes back to Unpaid.
  • Stripe account restricted: Stripe needs more information from you. Fieldnote shows a red banner in Settings > Payments; follow the link to finish it in Stripe.
  • Currency not supported: invoices must be in USD or CAD.

#Ask the customer to try again

Failed payments do not change the invoice amount. Click Resend invoice to send the customer a fresh Pay now link. If the customer pays another way, for example by check, record it with Record payment so the invoice is marked paid and syncs correctly to QuickBooks.
